Try Everything Once! Variety at Brigitte Gauci Borda Summer School
Most of us wonder if we would have been any good at Spanish dancing, or Jazz, or Hip Hop, but very few have had the chance to try any, let alone all of these disciplines, together with Drama, Ballet, Latin, Parchment, Arts, Crafts and Make Up! Yet this was just what the Brigitte Gauci Borda Summer School offered this year, with a smorgasbord of different skills out of which students could choose any number. The Summer went by like a whirlwind, but each and every child discovered at least one new talent she never knew she had. There was no shortage of hilarity as in the space of a morning ballerinas would descend from their tiptoes to stomp and flounce in a Spanish dance, and then rush downstairs to a drama class or to a make up lesson by Bianca Hili. They got to know the guest teachers and students from outside the school as well of course, and this in itself created a lively atmosphere.
Finally it came to an end and parents were allowed to join in the fun with an hour’s entertainment put together simply to give them a taste of what the Summer School was all about. All the arts, crafts and parchment items that the students had created with their teachers Simona Mamo and Nadine Briffa were displayed in the school’s majestic halls, for parents to see as they walked in.
The show opened with Spanish dancing orchestrated by Ann Marie Busuttil, fans half-covering faces suggestively as the stamping feet gave a more assertive message. Jazz dancers with attitude followed, choreographed and directed by Lynne Salomone Reynaud, and then the girls metamorphosed into lithe and graceful ballerinas exploiting the enormous studio to the full with their large sweeping movements. The brief dramatic sketches were surprisingly effective, depicting familiar scenes of civil service obduracy, teenage somnolence, peer pressure and the anguish of drug taking, under the able direction of Irene Christ. The Latin dance taught by Elaine Zerafa had real style, a great achievement within such a short course, and finally the zany, essentially modern style of Kristina Schranz’s Hip-Hop, a huge hit with girls and audience alike, rounded off the show.
The performance culminated with a brief speech and presentation of certificates from Brigitte Gauci Borda who is principal and director of the school.
The next exciting event for the Brigitte Gauci Borda school of Ballet is the celebration of the school’s 15th anniversary with Coppelia ballet to be staged at the Manoel Theatre on the 26th, 27th and 28th of November featuring Russian Zhanat Atymtayev and Japanese Chika Temma who are the principal guests dancers. The new term will be commencing on the 27th September. For registrations call on tel 21300756, 21341755, 79341755
