MALTESE DANCERS PLACE THIRD IN INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL BARCELONA
Six dancers from the Brigitte Gauci Borda school of ballet; Desiree Azzopardi, Rita Bonello Alison Camilleri, Sue Vassallo, Stephanie Young and Alison Zammit,
have recently participated in the Grand Prix International Dance Awards Festival 2007 which was held in Barcelona over the Easter weekend. They presented two different styles of dance Hip Hop choreographed by Sue Vassallo and Classical Ballet Repertoire prepared by Ivelina Dimitrova.
Brigitte Gauci Borda who accompanied the dancers was responsible for the lighting design of the numbers presented by her school. The school was awarded 3rd price in the Classical Ballet category. The dancers who represented this section were Desiree Azzopardi and Rita Bonello who performed Classical Ballet solos from Paquita and Don Quicotte. Before this award was presented the organizer Mr Girogio Mordenti explained that this is the most difficult category since the dancers have to be so precise in their technique, artistry and style of the original choreography.
Brigitte Gauci Borda said ‘This is the first time I have presented my students in an international competition, I took them up for the experience but when we won third place it was an added bonus and very encouraging indeed! This is full proof that we are on an international level and our standards are high. It is important for young dancers to see what there is out there, meeting and mixing with dancers from all over the world is a very good learning experience’.
Over 50 countries took part in this competition some of these were from Croacia, Luthinia, America, Canada, Scotland, England, Italy , China, California, Isreal and Russia
